How APS Marketing Consulting came about …

When I first started out in the marketing industry, around thirty years ago, I have to admit that I was totally unaware of the roller coaster journey ahead of me.

There’s been some fantastic ‘ups’ as well as some hard to take ‘downs’, but without them, I really wouldn’t be doing what I do today with my marketing consultancy or teaching Asentiv’s referral marketing programmes.

So, briefly here’s how I got to where I am today.

Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to work with some amazing marketing agencies, companies and brands and their retail/business networks, including Peugeot, Cineworld, Iveco, Daewoo (remember them?), Chrysler, Jeep, JD Wetherspoon, Toyota, Mercedes Benz, Fiat, to name but a few.

For the most part, there was success and some enjoyable business trips to Germany, Italy and the US, but … a very BIG but … it was taking its toll on me. The commuting and working hours were getting longer; the restarts/relocations following redundancy (all four of them!); and to be honest the internal politics were driving me mad, causing stress and anxiety in my personal life. Add to that losing my parents to nasty illnesses, I was starting not to recognise ‘me’ and it was feeling like pushing water up a hill! Things had to change!

What Next?

After a final redundancy in 2017, I took a little time out to decide ‘what next’? As I was in my late’ish fifties, going back to corporate world was not really an option. There was some careful thinking and family discussions over a few months, then I decided to ‘go it alone’ in January 2018 and APS Marketing Consulting was born and set up specifically to use my vast ‘agency and corporate’ marketing experience to work alongside smaller businesses, as I believed if they get their marketing right from the outset, they’d have the best chance to succeed and grow.

After all, my background was developing and running retailer and dealer marketing programmes during much of my corporate and agency life and I understood the finer points of local and regional marketing, as well as the bigger picture nationally. I knew I could improve the quality and effectiveness of marketing for a small business with good advice and developing and delivering sensible, affordable and targeted marketing strategies, plans and activities, rather than a more ad-hoc approach many tell me they use.

Getting Established

It was a tough first couple of years getting established and ‘getting my name out there’, however now I’m starting to see the rewards for my efforts with the marketing consulting business and more recently being approved to be a Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Marketing (FCIM) and adding new skills delivering training workshops on Asentiv’s referral marketing programmes to build better, stronger business relationships that work. 

I believe APS Marketing Consulting has the right tools, marketing knowledge and experience to help any small business grow and prosper.

That’s me and my story. To be honest, it’s the most satisfying job I’ve had, working with ambitious great people like you with the same mindset, enjoying more time with my family … and the commute, just a few seconds across the landing to my office at home, which is now in the lovely village of Spratton in Northamptonshire!

Now with a bit of spare time, I enjoy playing walking football (virus permitting), watching the mighty Gillingham FC (in League One for those that don’t know) and getting along to some live rock music gigs (when they’re on of course).

What Exactly Do I Do?

Simply put, I help ambitious smaller businesses solve their marketing challenges by developing marketing strategies and plans using the right marketing activities to reach their target markets. Now that is done using my thirty years industry knowledge and experience … and importantly with your input so I can understand your business, goals, objectives and of course budget.

My client-base ranges from new startups launching to established businesses looking to accelerate growth and have advised and worked with a legal bookkeeper, a software developer, a fire safety & security business, an IT consultant, a truck and van dealer group, a wellness clinic, a payroll business, an HR consultant and even a local dog training business. I have also been bought in to act as an interim or part time marketing manager or director for bigger companies, offering strategic advice and support across the marketing mix.

This can include:

  • Planning and/or delivering marketing strategies for organisations who require senior marketing support to deliver on their business objectives.
  • Acting as an interim Marketing Director for organisations who currently don’t have the requirement for a full time marketing support, but need regular input from an experienced marketing leader.
  • Assisting and supporting an existing junior marketing team who may need structure, guidance, and a more strategic oversight.
  • Acting as an extra pair of hands for businesses who need experienced marketing support for a particular project or campaign.
  • Helping early stage startups and established businesses looking to launch new products to conduct market research and develop their market positioning and initial offering.
  • Putting in place reporting and tracking for digital and traditional marketing activities, where possible, to help businesses measure ROI and make better strategic decisions.
